COFOUNDER'S NOTE / 02

Why I built Flare

What do I want most right now? That question led me to start building an app called Flare this summer.

It can feel like social media gives us the freedom to connect with anyone and post anything. Yet for the past few years, I have felt the opposite: the pressure to choose words that will not upset anyone, and photos that might earn likes.

Flare removes the preview from the camera, and you cannot review a photo right after taking it. You create a group with only the friends you invite. You simply let one another know that you captured this moment, then everyone opens the photos together at noon the next day.

An outrageously unflattering selfie. A passing view or feeling. By the next day, those fragments have become vivid memories, wrapping you in a strange warmth.
